Ginger Cookies

June 30th 2006 08:22
These are another of Candice's specialties. She is the queen of cookies. We call these ‘ginger squish’, in opposition to ‘ginger snaps’. They are technically biscuits, but their delightful squishy texture makes them halfway to cake.

Ingredients:
1 ½ Cups of Ground Ginger
1 Cup of Baking Soda

½ Teaspoon of Allspice
¼ Teaspoon of Nutmeg
½ Teaspoon of Cinnamon
2 ½ Cups of Plain Flour
1 ½ Cups of Sugar
½ a Cup of Butter
1 Egg
4 Tablespoons of Black Molasses
1 Teaspoon of Lemon Juice

Method:
Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius
Cream the butter and most of the sugar together with an electric beater in a medium sized bowl. Add the baking soda, flour and spices and stir well. Beat the egg in a small bowl then add to the mixture along with the lemon juice and molasses. Stir well until everything is combined evenly and the mixture is of a thick, moist consistency.

Shape the mixture into small round balls and roll them in the remaining sugar. Place on a well greased baking tray and press them down gently to flatten. Nevertheless leave them relatively thick or they will not remain squishy as desired. Cook for approximately 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool for ten minutes and enjoy!

Worth 1000 is an interactive image hosting site, with a special focus on photoshop work.
Check out this contest that was hosted by Worth 1000. The premise was that you had to create a photo shopped image that represents a common phobia. Extra points were awarded for skill, creativity and clever juxtapositions. The objects were often every day items, that instilled fear in some way. Some of my favourites were goulish representations of food. Archives can be found at isplay=photoshop" target="_blank">Worth 1000.

Journeys Café Katoomba

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Katoomba and part of the appeal is the fresh air, beautiful local scenery and of course the selection of lovely shops along Katoomba street.

This is another really easy thing to make when you have sweet cravings but nothing much around. It’s also a lot healthier than indulging in junk food.

This is another exploration into the world of vegetarian cooking by my sister in her search for new and exciting non-meat flavours. Which is a challenge to say the very least. Many people would not notice, but if you actually scroll down the menu in many prominent restaurants, there are often only a very small number of vegetarian dishes, sometimes as few as one or two. I believe that it certainly wouldn’t hurt to reduce our consumption of meat, particularly red meat. There are many delicious vegetarians options out there, they just generally get a bad wrap. Its all about finding strong, distinct flavours for a dish, but using alternative sources to meat, such as nuts or cheeses.

Yummy and healthy, and great to warm up the house in winter with the oven on! This is just a simple dinner that you can make when there's not a lot left in the fridge and you're not feeling particularly inspired. I like to make extra so I can warm it up the next day for lunch. It's even passable cold if you don't have access to a microwave at lunch time. All your co-workers will be jealous! (And I know that's your aim in life!)

Garlic and Herb Bread Recipe

June 16th 2006 05:34
This is just a simple one but always a winner nonetheless. Garlic bread is a great filling accompaniment to soup, pizza or lasagne. I have been severely disappointed with the garlic bread that you find in the frozen section of your supermarket, it’s tasteless and no where near garlicky enough. You know its enough when you can kill vampires by breathing on them! Similarly, pizza chain take away garlic bread doesn’t cut it either, it is always limp and soggy.
So I always make my own. And it is definitely worth it.

Benefits of Red Wine

June 15th 2006 04:15
They say that a glass of red wine each day will keep you in optimum condition. But why? What is it that separates red wine from other forms of alcohol? While alcohol has been positively demonised as far as health concerns go, red wine has been advocated as part of a healthy diet.

1. Red wine contains resveratrol, which is found in grape skins and seeds. Resveratrol may inhibit tumor development in some cancers, according to one study. Another study indicated that resveratrol aided in the formation of nerve cells, which experts believe may be helpful in the treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Review - Luddy’s Sutherland

The first thing you notice about Luddy’s is the ever enticing window display. The glass case is filled with delicate pastries and sweet delights, beckoning you inside. These include caramel slices, lamingtons, meringues, cherry pie and scones.

Gourmet Porridge (Oatmeal)

June 13th 2006 09:56
I believe porridge is a heavily underrated breakfast food. Look, goldilocks had to be on to something or she wouldn’t have taken such big risks for a delicious steaming bowl of porridge. This is a great start to the day if you have a little extra time than usual and don’t think you’ll get another chance to eat for a while. Porrige is very filling and will keep you going all morning. It’s also great for winter because it warms your insides right up.

Carbonated Milk - RPM & E-Moo

June 12th 2006 09:31
Got milk?
No, I don’t got it. I just don’t get it. Why would they do such a thing?
Only in America could this happen. And it did happen. The first variety developed is called ‘E-moo’ and is targeted towards children. The rationale behind this new form of milk, according to the inventors, is to make milk more appealing to kids who are addicted to soft drinks. However, the milk is coloured and flavoured to cover up the bitter taste caused by the carbonation. Surely it would just be better to beat the kids every time they wanted a soft drink, like in the good old days? I know a girl who was forced to make vomiting sounds as a young child whenever she passed a McDonald’s, and now, Clockwork Orange style, she has an aversion to McDonald’s food.

It seems that specialty chocolate cafés called ‘Max Brenner – Chocolate by the Bald Man’ have been popping up everywhere in Sydney. There is now one in Darlinghurst, Chatswood, Manly, Double Bay and Parramatta just for starters. These cafes specialise in chocolatey dishes including Italian hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, cakes and the like. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Well it is not.

Warm Winter Vegetable Soup

June 6th 2006 12:20
Its that time of year again – Winter! That means snuggling in blankets, rugged up with mugs of hot chocolate and of course vegetable soup. This winter is already shaping up to be a really cold one and I find that a big bowl of vegetable soup does just the trick for fighting off the cold (and flu).

Benefits of the Humble Apple

June 5th 2006 12:14
They say “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” (or is it the dentist…or dermatologist?) While this is no fail safe guarantee, there are many good reasons why an apple a day is a start to balanced nutrition.

1. Research suggest that apples will boost memory capacity and your ability to learn. This has been tentatively attributed to their anti-oxidant levels.

Asian Pork Dumplings Recipe

June 3rd 2006 08:45
Quite a few people I know go crazy over these dumplings which you can get from any good restaurant in China town. Little did you know they are quite easy to make at home! I believe that they’re quite healthy as you boil them and a lot of the fat and oil gets removed this way. These are warm and delicious and I tend to eat a lot in one sitting.

Ready Steady Cook Review

June 2nd 2006 04:32
This is pretty neat show for a bit of day time television, running at 2pm weekdays on the Ten network. The basic premise is that high profile professional chefs have to compete, iron chef style, using a set of ingredients in a certain amount of time.

This show is becoming really popular and my family and friends rave about it. I think the secret is it makes no excuses for what it is. Ready Steady Cook is just a bit of cheaply made fun day time television. The set is brightly coloured and funky looking. They unashamedly use little gimmicks like cutesy audience voting cards of cartoon capsicums and tomatoes. ‘Nicki’ then counts them up and holds up a real capsicum or tomato to signify the winner. It’s cute, it’s silly, and that’s ok.
